The Harsh Realities of Moving to Colorado You Need to Know

So, you’re thinking of making the move to Colorado—the land of stunning mountain vistas, craft beer galore, and endless outdoor adventures. But before you trade in your city shoes for hiking boots, there are some cold (and dry) truths you should prepare for.

Altitude Adjustment Is Real At first, you might feel like a superhero breathing in that crisp mountain air—until you walk up a flight of stairs and feel like you’ve just run a marathon. Colorado’s mile-high altitude will humble you. Expect gasping, dry lips, and a slight headache until your body acclimates.

“300 Days of Sunshine” Doesn’t Mean Warmth Yes, Colorado boasts a lot of sunny days, but don’t be fooled—those bright rays often come paired with freezing temperatures or, better yet, snow. Ever been sunburned while standing in a snowbank? You’re about to experience that strange reality.

Everything Is Outdoorsy If you aren’t already into hiking, skiing, or mountain biking, get ready for some serious peer pressure. In Colorado, outdoor activities are practically a way of life, and not participating can leave you feeling like the odd one out. Your social life may hinge on how well you can tackle a 14er.

Sneaky Traffic Woes You’ll hear people say, “It’s not like LA traffic,” but don’t get too comfortable. I-25 and I-70 can be a nightmare, especially during ski season or holiday weekends when everyone is heading to the mountains. Your quick trip to the slopes can easily turn into a five-hour gridlock ordeal.

Ski Season: More Stress Than Fun Thinking of hitting the slopes every weekend? Think again. Between steep lift ticket prices, massive crowds, and treacherous winter driving conditions, you may start to think twice about how much you really love skiing. Netflix might seem like the smarter option.

The Dryness Will Get You Colorado’s dry climate is no joke. You’ll be constantly applying lotion, lip balm, and drinking more water than you thought humanly possible. Expect cracked knuckles and flaky skin to become part of your daily routine.

Bears Are Part of Life In some areas, running into a bear isn’t just an outdoor hiking concern—it’s a “taking out the trash” kind of problem. If you leave food or garbage out, don’t be surprised if a bear treats it like their personal snack bar.

Four Seasons in One Day Colorado weather changes faster than you can say “sunshine.” You’ll wake up to frosty conditions, hit the warm afternoon in shorts, and be bundled up by dinner. Always have layers handy—Colorado doesn’t play by normal seasonal rules.

The Subaru Obsession Is Real Within months of living in Colorado, you’ll understand why everyone drives a Subaru. The rugged terrain and unpredictable weather make it the unofficial state vehicle. Soon enough, you’ll find yourself at a dealership debating between an Outback or Forester.

Marijuana? So Last Decade Yes, weed is legal, but the novelty has worn off. In 2024, you’re more likely to hear people discussing their favorite kombucha flavors or CBD-infused snacks than their latest dispensary visit. The cannabis hype has settled into a chill part of Colorado life, with no one really batting an eye.

Ready for the Adventure? So, are you still excited to move to Colorado? Between the unpredictable weather, altitude struggles, and bear encounters, it’s not all serene mountain bliss. But if you can handle the quirks, you’ll get to enjoy jaw-dropping views, top-notch breweries, and a vibrant outdoor lifestyle. Just don’t forget your moisturizer!
