Many of the public pools in Denver have been closed or had shortened hours due to a shortage of lifeguards being employed. City officials are hoping to change that trend by offering a $1000 incentive to newly hired and certified lifeguards.

Denver Economic Development & Opportunity (DEDO) hopes to attract applicants through the Denver Workforce Services division and boost the amount of applicants received for the Denver Parks & Recreation Department.

Lifeguard applicants who successfully pass Denver’s certification requirements and begin working by September 30, 2022 will be eligible for the incentive. The applicants must be ages 15 years and older and pass the swimming certification test administered by DPR including:

Swimming 300 yards (no back or sidestroke).
Treading water using only legs for 2 minutes
Completing a timed event that involves bringing a 10 pound weight to the surface in a simulated rescue scenario.

Applicants must complete their verification after June 21 and begin working by September 30th. DPR said it will pay the full cost of certification or renewal for job applicants interested.

Denver lifeguards currently earn $15.87 an hour.
Interested applicants can find further information at denvergov.org/lifeguards.

So if you know of any lifeguards or teenage swimmers looking for a job, this could be a great opportunity. Denver needs more lifeguards now, and who doesn’t like a sign on bonus?
