A Scenic Easter Tradition Lives On at Mother Cabrini Shrine
Perched in the foothills above Golden, the Mother Cabrini Shrine is one of Colorado’s most peaceful and meaningful places to visit—especially during Easter. The site honors Frances Xavier Cabrini, known as Mother Cabrini, a trailblazing humanitarian who became the first U.S. citizen to be canonized as a saint. Born in Italy in 1850, she arrived in the United States in 1889 and dedicated her life to serving immigrants, the poor, and the sick. Her work stretched across the country, including Colorado, where she supported Italian laborers working in mines and along the railroads.
After her death in 1917 and canonization in 1946, the Colorado location she once visited transformed into a place of reflection and pilgrimage. Over time, it grew into the shrine visitors know today—complete with a chapel, a winding stairway of prayer, and the iconic 22-foot Sacred Heart of Jesus statue that overlooks the surrounding landscape. In 2026, the shrine will once again host a full Holy Week schedule, beginning with Holy Thursday Mass at 7 p.m., followed by Good Friday services including the Seven Last Words at noon and the Passion Liturgy at 2 p.m. Holy Saturday features the Easter Vigil at 8 p.m., leading into Easter Sunday with Masses at 8 a.m., 11 a.m., and a 2 p.m. Spanish service.
Unlike large public Easter events, the experience at Mother Cabrini Shrine is quiet and reflective. There are no egg hunts or vendors—just traditional Catholic services set against a serene mountain backdrop. Many visitors choose to pair Mass with a walk up the stairs, time in prayer, or a stop at the grotto, making it as much a personal experience as a communal one.
