Peacock will increase its subscription price starting August 17 for the first time in streaming history.

According to Variety, “effective August 17, for existing users on their next billing cycle and immediately for new customers, the price of Peacock Premium (with ads) will increase by $1, to $5.99 per month, and Peacock Premium Plus (which is mostly commercial-free) will rise $2, to $11.99 per month.”

Media outlets have reported the hike in price is due to the increase of subscribers “hitting nearly 22 million” subscribers upping their subscriptions by 60%. According to NBC Universal, the price hike will allow “Peacock to continue to invest in the best user experience and the highest-quality content while remaining competitive in the marketplace.”

Peacock programming is an extension of NBC Universals for live and on-demand watch options, bringing in over 5,000 hours of live watch options and over 80,000 hours of binging options. Earlier this year, the company shut off access to Peacock’s free tier to new users and, in June, stopped bundling Peacock Premium for free for Comcast’s Xfinity customers.

With the price increase coming mid-August, plenty of new movies, shows, and stand-up comedy specials are ready to watch. Kevin Hart released his latest stand-up, “Reality Check,” and his hit talk show “Hart to Heart” in early July. Starting next month, on August 3, the box office hit “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” will be available for streaming.
