RTD Bus Crashes into Pond in Aurora, Injuring Driver

A routine bus ride in Aurora took an unexpected turn Saturday afternoon when an RTD bus collided with a car and ended up in a pond.

According to the Aurora Police Department, the crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. near East Colorado Avenue and South Dayton Street. The impact forced the large public transit bus into a small body of water, prompting an emergency response.

15 Passengers Aboard, One Injured

Authorities confirmed that approximately 15 people were on the bus at the time of the accident. Fortunately, only the driver sustained injuries, which were described as minor. The driver was transported to the hospital as a precaution, while all other passengers were unharmed.

Investigation Underway

Police have not yet determined the exact cause of the crash or who was at fault. The driver of the sedan involved in the collision remained at the scene and is cooperating with investigators. Officials are working to determine whether speed, road conditions, or driver error played a role in the accident.

Traffic Disruptions in the Area

Following the crash, Dayton Street was closed in both directions at Colorado Avenue while crews worked to remove the bus from the pond. Emergency responders and tow trucks were on-site managing the cleanup, and authorities advised drivers to avoid the area until the road was fully cleared.

What’s Next?

RTD and the Aurora Police Department are conducting a full investigation into the incident. Officials will likely review traffic camera footage and witness statements to piece together the events leading up to the crash.

While bus crashes are rare, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of road safety and vigilance for both public transit and private vehicles.
