Crews Free 26-Year-Old Horse Stuck in Boulder County Mud Pit

A dramatic rescue unfolded in rural Boulder County on Thursday after a 26-year-old warmblood mare named Sweetiebecame trapped in a deep mud pit.

The incident happened around 1 p.m. near Plateau Road, not far from Lagerman Reservoir. Sweetie’s owner discovered her stuck and attempted to free her, but quickly became stuck himself before a neighbor intervened and called 911.

Multiple agencies responded, including the Boulder County Sheriff’s Office Animal Protection Unit, Boulder Fire Rescue, Boulder Rural Fire Rescue, and the Boulder Emergency Squad. Working together, crews carefully pulled Sweetie out of the mud while a veterinarian from VetweRx monitored her condition and administered treatment on site.

By early evening, rescuers used a tractor and IV fluids to help Sweetie regain her strength. At around 7:30 p.m., she was successfully brought to her feet — a critical step for her survival. Officials said she will need close monitoring over the next several days, but the outcome was positive thanks to the swift coordination of emergency teams.

Living in a rural county means sheriff’s deputies and local responders are often the first to face situations like these. Their training in animal rescues proved vital in giving an older mare like Sweetie another chance.
