Bear Casually Opens Door, Walks Into Telluride Home—Caught on Camera

A bold black bear was caught on video casually opening the front door of a home in the Telluride area and strolling right in. The now-viral footage, shared by Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW), shows the bear standing on its hind legs, gripping the doorknob with its paws, and effortlessly letting itself inside.

While surprising to some, CPW officials say this behavior is becoming increasingly common. Bears in Telluride and nearby Mountain Village have been entering homes frequently this summer, sometimes hitting multiple homes—or even the same one—within a single night. Once a bear figures out how to open a door, it often returns for more.

CPW urges residents to “bearproof” their homes and vehicles: lock all doors and windows, avoid leaving food in cars, and keep garbage secure. Quick reporting of bear encounters can help prevent further incidents and improve outcomes for both people and wildlife.
