Mountain Lion Group Spotted Roaming Colorado Backyard in Rare Sighting
A Colorado homeowner had a startling brush with wildlife when a group of mountain lions wandered through her backyard in La Plata County. Captured on home security cameras and personal cellphone footage, the video shows the big cats calmly exploring the property, pausing to observe their surroundings—and even locking eyes with the person filming—before disappearing into the distance together.
The sighting took place on June 14 and is drawing attention due to how rare it is to see multiple mountain lions together. While these predators are typically solitary, exceptions can occur, especially with a mother and her nearly grown cubs.
The homeowner shared that her property sits near a well-known wildlife corridor frequently traveled by animals such as bears and mountain lions. In Colorado, mountain lions are widespread, with an estimated population between 3,800 and 4,400. They typically prefer rugged, forested terrain like areas filled with piñon pine, juniper, mountain mahogany, oak brush, and ponderosa pine.
Although breathtaking, encounters like this are a good reminder that when you live near nature in Colorado, you’re sharing space with some serious wildlife.
