Mud-Covered Man in Speedo Leads Idaho Springs Police on Bizarre Chase
A relaxing afternoon at Indian Hot Springs turned into one of Idaho Springs’ strangest police chases when officers confronted a suspect wanted in Douglas County — only for him to bolt, covered in mud and wearing nothing but a Speedo.
According to an arrest affidavit, police responded to reports of credit card fraud and stolen identification at the hot springs on August 26. The suspect, identified as Alec Bogus, was found in a mud bath. When informed of the outstanding warrant, officers allowed him to shower before escorting him to jail. But as they walked him out, Bogus suddenly ran, sprinting barefoot through the parking lot and up a hillside, still slick with mud.
The pursuit quickly became chaotic. One officer injured his knee during the uphill chase, while another possibly tore ligaments, according to the report. A drone was deployed to track Bogus, eventually spotting him near an intersection. A resident later told police he saw the man dash toward his shed, where officers soon found him hiding.
With nowhere left to run, Bogus surrendered. The affidavit noted no search was needed at the time of arrest since the suspect had nothing on him but a pair of black Speedos. He, too, injured his knee during the incident and was taken to a hospital before being booked into Clear Creek County Jail.
Bogus now faces multiple charges, including second-degree burglary, escape, obstruction of justice, and resisting arrest — the aftermath of what may go down as one of Idaho Springs’ most unusual pursuits.
