Aurora Grandmother Seriously Injured in 97 MPH Tesla Crash: Family Calls for Safer Streets

A 63-year-old grandmother is recovering in the hospital after a high-speed crash left her with severe injuries and her family shaken. Irma Herrera was driving with five family members on Alameda Parkway near Buckley Road when Aurora police say a Tesla barreled into her vehicle going 97 mph in a 40 mph zone.

Herrera recalled seeing a green light and then losing consciousness. “I didn’t know what happened until I woke up in the ER,” she said. The impact left her with a brain bleed, a broken ankle, and severe bruising. Miraculously, her five family members — including a child — survived the crash with less serious injuries.

The crash occurred at an intersection locals say is notorious for speeding and frequent wrecks. From her hospital bed, Herrera is now calling on city leaders to take action. “There’s always a wreck. Every other day, there’s a wreck,” she said. She hopes that added traffic signals or speed deterrents could prevent future tragedies.

Herrera is expected to undergo an extended rehabilitation process, and her family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover mounting medical expenses. The driver of the Tesla has not yet been publicly identified, and Aurora police continue to investigate the incident.
