Bishop Castle, a fairytale-like structure nestled deep in Colorado’s San Isabel Forest, offers an unexpected marvel in the heart of the Rockies. Located about 1.5 hours south of Colorado Springs, this unique attraction stands as a testament to the vision and dedication of Jim Bishop, who began building it alone in 1969. Starting as a simple stone cottage, the project transformed over the years into a towering, intricate castle, making it one of the most fascinating roadside stops in the region.

The castle’s story began when Jim, just 15 years old in 1959, purchased 2.5 acres of land for $450. Originally intended as a family project with his father to clear the land, Jim’s ambitions grew, and he decided to build a castle after he married. With no formal architectural plans, the castle expanded organically as Jim’s ideas took shape. Now three stories tall, Bishop Castle features a grand ballroom, a fire-breathing dragon sculpture, a 160-foot steeple, and intricate ironwork, a nod to Jim’s family’s ornamental iron business. Jim’s son, Daniel Bishop, now oversees the ongoing work.

Visiting Bishop Castle is not a typical tourist experience. The castle is free to enter and open year-round, but visitors park along the highway and should be prepared for an active construction site during summer months. Safety codes and railings are sparse, so caution is advised, especially in winter when icy conditions can make exploring risky. For those with a fear of heights, the towers—known to sway with the wind—might be best avoided. Despite these quirks, the sweeping views from the top are worth the climb for those brave enough.

If you’re looking to expand your adventure, consider visiting the Great Sand Dunes National Park, home to North America’s tallest dunes, just two hours away from Bishop Castle. Bishop Castle is a testament to creative vision and perseverance, offering a glimpse into one man’s dream that continues to inspire visitors to explore Colorado’s most unique landmarks.
