Colorado Climbs U.S. News Rankings, Just Misses Top 10 Best States

Colorado is back on the rise in U.S. News & World Report’s annual Best States rankings, landing at No. 11 in the 2025 list—its highest placement in years. After slipping to No. 16 last year, the Centennial State bounced back thanks to top-tier scores in education, economy, and health care.

The report evaluates all 50 states across eight key categories: health care, education, economy, infrastructure, opportunity, fiscal stability, crime and corrections, and natural environment. Colorado earned standout rankings in education (3rd), economy (6th), and health care (9th), helping boost its overall placement.

However, the state still struggles in certain areas. Colorado ranked 47th in crime and corrections and 43rd in fiscal stability, two metrics that pulled it just shy of the top 10. Opportunity also lagged, with the state coming in at 33rd.

The top 10 states for 2025 include Utah, New Hampshire, and Idaho, with Louisiana holding the bottom spot once again. While Colorado didn’t crack the top 10, its strong performance in core quality-of-life categories signals progress—and a potential leap forward in future rankings.
