Suspected DUI Driver Arrested After Allegedly Helping Himself to Watermelon in Lone Tree Home
A suspected hit-and-run driver in Lone Tree was arrested after police say he fled the scene of a crash and ended up inside a stranger’s home eating watermelon from the refrigerator.
According to police, the incident began around 10 a.m. on June 2 when officers responded to reports of a wrong-way driver involved in a hit-and-run crash on Lincoln Avenue. Witnesses told investigators they saw the driver collide with another vehicle before leaving the scene.
The search for the suspect didn’t last long. Police tracked him to a nearby residence, where the homeowner initially assumed he was one of the construction workers working on the property.
That assumption changed when they heard someone opening the refrigerator.
The homeowner contacted police, who arrived and found the suspect inside the kitchen. Body camera footage later released shows officers taking the man into custody with a bowl of watermelon sitting nearby.
As reported by KUSA, investigators determined the driver was allegedly under the influence. A preliminary breath test showed a blood alcohol content of 0.122, according to police.
The suspect was booked into the Douglas County Jail and faces multiple charges, including DUI, felony trespassing, careless driving, leaving the scene of an accident, and failure to report an accident.
While the crash itself was serious, the unusual ending has drawn attention online thanks to the suspect’s unexpected snack break inside a stranger’s home.
