It’s February 9th, Also Known As National Pizza Pie Day.

Flatbreads with some sort of sauce, cheese and toppings have been enjoyed since the beginning of history, but in 997 AD, it was called Pizza for the first time.    1,025 years later, it is one of the most popular foods in America, with over 3 Billion pizzas consumed a year.

With over 150 shops selling pizza in Denver, we can’t hit every Mom and Pop Pizzeria for our list, but here’s where you can get your fill of delicious Italian inspired goodness, all with Colorado roots

Beau Jo’s:

When you think of Colorado Style Pizza, nothing is more Colorado than Beau Jos.  They currently have 6 locations, but none is more iconic than the Idaho Springs location.  It’s a great place to pit stop on the way down from a day of riding.  The Pizza is super thick, and loaded with toppings, and there’s no shame in eating it with a fork.  And even people who don’t eat crust end up with clean plates thanks to honey on all the tables.  Plus they have a competition sized pizza for people who think they can take it on.

Anthony’s Pizza

Anthony’s has been slinging slices since 1984.  Many drunken nights have ended at Anthony’s with great pizza that pairs well with beer.  Big floppy slices can be folded, or just eat it the old fashioned way. They now have 18 locations from Fort Collins to Colorado Springs, so it’s likely there’s an Anthony’s near you.

Blackjack Pizza

Blackjack was founded in Colorado in 1983, by a University of Northern Colorado Student who thought we needed some competition in the Pizza Department.  He chose the name “Blackjack” as a game more people were familiar with than “Dominos. ”  They have a ton of locations through out Colorado, as well as Wyoming, Arizona and Florida.

Fat Sully’s

I have never had Fat Sully’s, but they do offer a 26 inch Pizza, which was the biggest I could find.  For a little comparison,  a 26 inch Pizza has over 500 Square inches of Pizza.  Dominos X-large Pizza has just over 200 Square inches.  If you’re looking for a big Pizza, Fat Sully’s is the place for you.

Marquis Pizza

The best food option at any concert venue in town is the pizza at the Marquis Theater.  In the middle of your favorite small band’s set you’ll start to smell the cheese and pepperoni in the air, and it’s nearly impossible to leave without getting at least one slice.  But if you couldn’t score tickets to the show, there’s also a walk up window to grab some late night sustenance.

Pizzeria Locale

After some friends visited Italy, they decided to bring back the traditional roots of pizza to Colorado.  They opened the first Pizzeria Locale in Boulder in 2011, with recipes straight from Naples.  They currently have 4 restaurants serving what is best described as Traditional Italian style pizza.

Pudge Brothers

Pudge Brothers is the Home of the Monster, a 20 inch Pizza that will leave leftovers, even with the hungriest of families.  There’s 7 locations around Denver.  Each location is Franchised individually, but the recipes are the same, and have been serving up pizzas since 1991.

Make sure you celebrate National Pizza Pie Day today by picking up a Pie at your favorite Local Pizzeria!
