Colorado has over $2.06 billion in unclaimed property, and it could be yours! Each year, millions of dollars are turned over to the state by businesses and organizations unable to locate the rightful owners of property. This unclaimed property has grown by half a billion dollars since 2024, and the state is holding onto it for you—until you claim it.

Unclaimed property can come in many forms, including uncashed checks, insurance proceeds, and even the contents of safe deposit boxes for which rent has expired for at least five years. Notably, it does not include real estate or vehicles. Colorado Treasurer Dave Young encourages everyone to check if they have unclaimed property through the Great Colorado Payback program, especially as we face rising costs on everyday essentials.

Since the program’s inception, Colorado’s Department of Treasury has returned over $721 million to rightful owners and heirs. In 2024 alone, the state returned nearly $62 million to about 74,000 claimants. To help people get their money back, Young has designated Feb. 1 as National Unclaimed Property Day. He urges Coloradans to visit colorado.findyourunclaimedproperty.com to search for any unclaimed property in their name.

To see if you have property waiting for you, simply visit the Great Colorado Payback website, click “Get Started,” and search by name or business. If you find property to claim, you can easily start the claim process online. You’ll need to provide information such as your current address, your relationship to the property owner, and a signed claim form, photo ID, and your Social Security number. Once submitted, you can track your claim status on the Treasury’s website.

So why not check today? You might just find some unexpected cash or even valuables like gold coins, jewelry, or rare bills. It’s easy and free, and who knows—there may be a little treasure waiting for you!
