Denver Divided: Who Reigns Supreme in Colorado Sports?

Spring is here in Colorado, and with it, baseball season! But with the Rockies’ home opener and the Nuggets fresh off their championship win, Denverites are bickering about who gets bragging rights. A recent poll by FOX31 sheds light on the fierce – and sometimes surprising – loyalty of Colorado sports fans.

Avalanche Take the Lead, Broncos Have Most Diehards

Believe it or not, the ice took the cake! The Colorado Avalanche came out on top with 37% of voters claiming them as their favorite team. Interestingly, the Denver Broncos, with a long and storied history, followed closely behind at 22%. However, the Broncos boast the most dedicated fanbase, with 26% considering themselves “committed” fans.

Rockies and Nuggets: A Tale of Two Fanbases

The news wasn’t so rosy for the Rockies. Despite a decent overall fanbase at 59%, only 12% consider themselves hardcore fans. This comes after a rough season and many fans expressing low hopes for 2024.

The Denver Nuggets, reigning NBA champions, found themselves in a similar situation. While 57% of respondents identified as fans, a surprising 43% said they weren’t really interested.  However, Nuggets fans can hold their heads high – a surprising poll question revealed that more Coloradans favor Nikola Jokic over Taylor Swift!

Longtime Residents Divided

The poll also debunked a myth – even longtime residents (over 20 years) are just as likely to root for the Broncos or Rockies as newcomers (5-20 years).

So, who wins the championship belt of Colorado fandom?** It’s a close call. The Avalanche have the most passionate fans, but the Broncos have the most loyal following. The Rockies and Nuggets bring up the rear, but hey, at least they have loyal followings (and Jokic apparently has better name recognition than Taylor Swift!).
