Colorado’s Top Restaurant for 2025 Is a Michelin-Starred Denver Gem Serving Bold, Modern Mexican Cuisine

Colorado isn’t usually the first state people think of when searching for standout Mexican food, but 2025 proves that’s a mistake. According to OpenTable’s annual rankings, the state’s top restaurant this year is Alma Fonda Fina, a Denver hotspot that continues to elevate Colorado’s growing reputation for exceptional, creative Mexican cuisine. Not only did it take the No. 1 spot statewide, but it also earned a coveted place on OpenTable’s list of the Top 100 Restaurants in America.

Led by Chef Johnny Curiel, Alma Fonda Fina carries a Michelin Star and boasts nearly 900 glowing reviews, with diners consistently praising its inventive flavors and impeccable execution. Curiel — who also opened Cozobi Fonda Fina in Boulder — draws deep inspiration from his Guadalajara roots, blending tradition with modern technique to create dishes that leave guests raving. Fan favorites like the caramelized sweet potato camote asado, the baked scallop dish callo de hacha al horno, and the shareable duck carnitas de pato appear repeatedly in reviews, many calling the restaurant the “best dining experience in Denver.”

The drink program doesn’t disappoint either. Alma Fonda Fina offers an impressive lineup of wines, Mexican spirits, and signature cocktails, including an avocado margarita and a sweet-corn-infused twist on the classic.

After working in kitchens since age 14, Curiel launched Alma Fonda Fina with his wife, Kasie, in 2023 — and the restaurant quickly earned national attention, including recognition from North America’s 50 Best Restaurants. The intimate dining room seats just 28 guests, with an additional eight seats at the chef’s counter for those who want a close-up look at the craft behind each dish. Patio seating is available in warmer months, offering another way to enjoy one of Denver’s most celebrated restaurants.

Because of its rising popularity, reservations can be hard to come by. Alma Fonda Fina releases tables 60 days in advance at midnight, and most time slots sell out quickly. Current hours run from mid-afternoon through late evening, varying slightly throughout the week.
