VFW Post 1, in Denver, was the 1st Veterans of Foreign Wars Post in the country. That’s a division of the bounds why several of its oldest members revere the post’s nostalgic neon subscribe as a piece of Colorado history.

A Bit Of History

You know the one. It hung outside the old VFW on Bannock Street for many years and was moved to storage when the organization moved to its Santa Fe Arts District location in 2014 – only to be lost when it came time for owner Evan Blom to change management companies at the storage facility.

Last year, a neon sign restorer was going through his scrap pile of broken signs and found the one that had been lost: The VFW’s iconic Bannock Street sign.

He fixed it and gave it back to Blom, who put it on display Wednesday night as part of his monthly Open House events at the VFW.

“This is an exciting time for us to be able to come together as a community and honor this piece of history,” said Sara Lee, executive director of Historic Denver. “We are so proud of Evan Blom’s commitment to bringing this sign back home to where it belongs.”

Lee celebrated the return of the sign with VFW members, Bannock Street neighbors, and the neon sign restorer.

“The neighborhood lost sight of this wonderful piece of history,” said Blom during his opening remarks. “I’m happy to have it back.”

After the ceremony, guests gathered around for a closer look at the iconic piece that’s now been restored to its former glory.
