If stocking the fridge keeps taking more of your grocery budget, this north Denver warehouse might be worth a look. At 5280 Produce, you can order a small or large box of fresh fruits and vegetables with an assortment that changes weekly. The program was created to make fresh produce more affordable, giving local families another option for their weekly grocery run. Just remember to bring cash. Check the box program.

From the Flea Market to a Denver Warehouse

Childhood friends Michael Martelli Jr. and Brad Jester opened 5280 Produce in 2013 inside the former Federal Fruit & Produce warehouse, which Michael’s father had operated. Michael grew up working alongside his dad. If you shopped at the Mile High Flea Market in the ’90s or early 2000s, you might have bought produce from him and his crew.

The weekly box program had an even smaller beginning: business manager and Arvada native Megan Ficco started it in her garage. Today, the business supplies families, restaurants and grocery stores across the Denver area. Read their story.

Another Way to Stretch Your Grocery Budget

For households watching their spending, the weekly assortment gives you a chance to compare what’s included with your usual grocery haul before ordering. Building meals around the box, or splitting one with someone if it’s more than you’ll use, could help stretch your budget. The business also works directly with local farmers when produce is in season, keeping a Colorado connection behind what ends up on your plate. Learn about its sourcing.
