Lashaya Stine was 16 years old when she walked out of her Aurora home in the early morning hours of July 15, 2016. She was an honor-roll student at George Washington High School who hoped to become a nurse and had a job interview scheduled for the following day.
She never came home.
Ten years later, Lashaya’s disappearance is receiving national attention again through the new Freeform and Hulu true-crime series Somebody Knows Something. The episode “Lost in the Night” follows host Kara Robinson Chamberlain as she travels to Colorado, speaks with Lashaya’s family and investigators, and takes another look at the hours surrounding her disappearance.
One of the biggest details explored in the episode involves a meeting police say took place shortly before Lashaya vanished. Investigators learned she planned to meet an ex-boyfriend near North Middle School. He told police Lashaya said she had something important to tell him, but the meeting ended roughly 10 minutes later without her revealing what it was. Surveillance footage investigators reviewed was consistent with the timeline he provided. Police have not accused him of causing Lashaya’s disappearance.
Investigators also revealed surveillance footage showing two unidentified people walking near the school around the same time. Authorities believe they could have information that helps explain what happened. A major search of a former residence connected to the investigation in 2020 ultimately produced no answer, and Lashaya remains missing today.
The renewed attention is ultimately about more than a television series. Lashaya’s family has spent a decade waiting for answers, and investigators continue asking anyone who may know something to come forward.
