The Frightmare Compound: Inside Colorado’s Most Haunted Attraction with Josh Holder

For over 40 years, The Frightmare Compound has haunted thrill-seekers across Colorado. Founded by Brad Holder in 1983, this family-run business has grown into one of the most iconic haunted attractions in the U.S. Now run by Josh Holder, who inherited the business after his father’s passing, Frightmare is known for offering a deeply immersive horror experience unlike any other.

The Frightmare Experience

What sets The Frightmare Compound apart? Josh Holder has focused on authenticity and realism, using actual antique mining equipment, tombstones, and even wrecked cars. The haunted house sits on an eerie swamp, with its half-indoor, half-outdoor design creating a truly unique atmosphere. Every year, Josh introduces new, meticulously crafted scenes that blend the line between reality and nightmare.

One of the most exciting additions in recent years is a swamp bayou, complete with water features, docks, and a wrecked airplane, all designed to make guests feel like they’ve stepped into a horror movie.

The Haunted Mansion on Colfax

In addition to Frightmare, Josh transforms his bar, The Mansion on Colfax, into a pop-up horror-themed venue every October. Known as The Haunted Mansion on Colfax, the bar offers an eerie cocktail experience in a haunted house-like setting, making it a must-visit for Halloween enthusiasts in Denver.

Frightmare’s Community Impact

Beyond the scares, Josh Holder has turned Frightmare into a place that gives back to the community. Each year, the haunted house donates costumes and tickets to families in need, allowing everyone to enjoy the magic and thrill of Halloween, regardless of their circumstances. It’s about more than fear—it’s about giving people an escape from reality, even if only for a few haunted moments.

Behind the Screams

Josh Holder’s dedication doesn’t end when Halloween is over. He spends months designing and constructing new scenes, drawing inspiration from horror trends worldwide. His commitment to staying ahead of the curve ensures that each year’s experience is fresh, terrifying, and unforgettable.

Whether you’re looking for genuine scares or an immersive Halloween adventure, The Frightmare Compound has set the standard for haunted attractions in Colorado.
